  • How long does a PayShap transaction take?Transactions are processed in real-time, meaning the payment is instantly reflected in the recipient’s account.
  • What are the limits for PayShap transactions?You can transfer up to R50 000 per transaction. 
  • Do I need a bank account or ShapID to use PayShap?Yes, you must have a South African bank account with a PayShap-enabled bank. You don't need a ShapID to receive payments, but it’s required to receive payments via cellphone number.
  • Who can use PayShap, and whom can I pay with it?
    You can use PayShap if you have an active transactional or savings account and are registered for Cellphone Banking or have a Banking App profile. You can make payments to anyone who is registered for PayShap with their bank and has a ShapID.
  • What is a ShapID? A PayShap identifier, typically your cellphone number followed by your bank name (e.g., 0821112345@bank).

  • Can I have more than one ShapID? Yes, you can have a ShapID for each bank, but only one Primary ShapID, which is the account you’ll receive payments into when using just your cellphone number.

  • What happens if I change my phone number or get a new SIM card?

    • If your number stays the same, there’s no impact.
    • If the number changes, follow your bank’s process for updating it.

 

  • Can I transfer my Primary ShapID to a different bank?
    • Yes, but you must deregister your Primary ShapID from the current bank before registering it with another.

  • What is a Shap Name?

    • A Shap Name is a registered business name used as an identifier instead of a cellphone number (e.g., joeplumber@bank).
    • Only registered companies can register a Shap Name at launch. The registration process is bank-specific.
  • What do businesses need to register a Shap Name?

    • The requirements for registering a Shap Name vary by bank.
    • Contact your bank for details on the registration rules and process
  • What if my Shap Name is already taken?

    • If your desired Shap Name is already taken, you will need to choose and register a different one.
  • What should I do if my cellphone is stolen or I experience SIM swap fraud?
    If your cellphone is stolen or you suspect SIM swap fraud, contact your bank immediately to block your account and deactivate your banking app. Each bank has specific procedures for handling these situations.
  • What if I receive an unexpected payment or experience fraud-related issues?
    If you receive a payment from an unknown sender, it may have been an error—contact your bank for guidance. If you experience fraud, report it to your bank, as they have fraud-handling processes in place.
  •  How is my personal information and security managed on PayShap?
    Only your display name and verified mobile number are visible to recipients. Extra security measures, including mobile banking app protections, can enhance safety. If you're being harassed after sharing your ShapID, block the caller, and if necessary, report them to the police.
